THE UNIVERSITY TOWER NEW FACE OF UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI
The 21 storey new state of- the
-art university of Nairobi tower will be ready for occupation early next year.
The Building which has transformed
the look of the University and the city’s view according to china Wu-Yi
Construction Company, which is contracted to build it, 60 per cent of its work
has been completed. They confirmed that they are looking forward to complete
and hand over the facility for use by next year .What still remains according
to the contractor includes cladding of the external facade of the building and
installation of mechanical and electrical service and interior finishing.
The tower now the tallest building
in the University Of Nairobi stands between Education and Gandhi buildings.
It’s directly opposite Norfolk Fairmont Hotel and next to The Kenya National Theatre.It
has been financed internally by the University of Nairobi and partners
including Confucius Institute with a donation of Kenya shillings 152million and
Manu Chandaria Foundation Kshs 50million.
Mr. Vincent Odhiambo Achieng a clerk at the university of Nairobi
construction and maintenance department whose office is mandated with the
construction and supervision of the Tower confirms that the Tower is due to be
completed by the end of this year. He Echoes sentiment of his boss
Arc.J.O.Odwallo that the tower will be very useful in easing the congestion of
ever growing population of the University of Nairobi which currently stands at
79,000 students.
The students of the University Of
Nairobi students received the information of the completion of the tower whose
construction is on top course and set to be finished for use by the end of this
year with mixed hope, joy and anticipation.
“We are looking forward to it with anticipation.
I think when it will be completed our
school of journalism will have all of its classes in the main campus and we
will be saved from attending some of classes in town as we are currently forced
to walk to town because of lack of
lecture venues .I hope our school of journalism will be allocated a fully
equipped studio,” said Winnie Were a student in the University’s School Of Journalism
who could not afford to hide her joy when She was informed of the news of the
completion of the tower by early next year.
Most students interviewed by the
reporter expressed anticipation that the tower will ease congestion and create
a conducive environment to conduct research as well as provide students with
state of the art learning environment. The Tower will comprise offices and
lecture theatres.
